Cincinnati beats Tulane 63-47

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Octavius Ellis netted a double-double, scoring 14 points and grabbing 10 rebounds, as Cincinnati took an early lead and held it to beat Tulane 63-47 on Saturday.

Kevin Johnson added 15 points for the Bearcats (20-9, 11-5 American Conference), Shaquille Thomas had 11 points and Gary Clark had eight points and nine rebounds.

Johnson sank back-to-back 3-pointers — he was 4 of 6 from distance overall — to cap a 13-4 start for the Bearcats on their way to a 30-16 advantage at the break.

Tulane got to within 12 points, 37-25, early in the second half but could not get closer as Cincinnati continued to dominate and cruised to the win. The Bearcats outrebounded Tulane 40-26 overall and finished with 47.2 percent shooting from the field compared to 34.8 percent for Tulane.

Louis Dabney led the Green Wave (14-14, 5-11) with 18 points.

Thunder’s Russell Westbrook undergoes surgery, will miss Sunday game vs. Lakers

Updated FEB 28, 2015 5:03p ET

Russell Westbrook had an historic February.

He’ll start March by missing a game.

Westbrook won’t play Sunday at the Lakers after suffering a fracture to his right cheek when teammate Andre Roberson tried to leap over Westbrook but instead kneed him in the head. Here’s the play, courtesy of Antony Slater of The Oklahoman. The injury happened with 2.5 seconds left in the game and left a visible dent in Westbrook’s cheek.

true

Westbrook had surgery in Los Angeles. He will be re-evaluated next week.

Earlier this season, Westbrook missed time when he broke a finger on his right hand, accidentally hitting it against teammate Kendrick Perkins. In all, he has missed 14 games this season. Westbrook has played 45 games and is averaging 26.5 points, 8.1 assists and 6.8 rebounds per game. In February, Westbrook averaged 31.2 points 10.3 assists and 9.1 rebounds per game. He finished the month with three-consecutive triple-doubles.

The loss of Westbrook means the team will be without both its stars Sunday in Los Angeles. Kevin Durant is also out. He is recovering from a second surgery on his right foot to repair a fracture.

D.J. Augustin, acquired from Detroit at the trade deadline, will likely start in Westbrook’s place. Kyle Singler will likely start again in place of Durant.

Fielding questions: Positions up for grabs for Rays’ cadre of middle infielders

Updated FEB 28, 2015 4:52p ET

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. – Their situation remains unsettled, the moving parts a blur, the possibilities for how their roles will shake out now standing as their team’s largest mystery.

They’re ready for this race to begin.

The Tampa Bay Rays own few position questions to start spring training, but the one about where Asdrubal Cabrera, Logan Forsythe, Nick Franklin and possibly Tim Beckham will fit within the middle infield will hover for weeks.

"There’s a lot more opportunity up the middle," Forsythe said Saturday at Charlotte Sports Park, before the Rays’ first full-squad workout. "It’s going to be a competition this spring, which is going to bring the best out of everybody."

That "everybody" includes an eight-year veteran who happens to be a two-time All-Star (Cabrera), plus a pair of utility players (Franklin, Forsythe) and a former No. 1 overall pick who has lived a crawl to the majors since he was drafted in 2008 (Beckham). Their ages range from 23 (Franklin) to 29 (Cabrera), their major-league experience stretches from five games (Beckham) to 963 (Cabrera), and their certainty about where this spring will lead starts and ends with zero.

"I don’t know yet," Cabrera said.

"I just want to go out there and just play the game," Franklin said.

"There’s no telling where it’s going to shake out," Forsythe said.

true

Likely, there are two scenarios. If Franklin proves he’s capable at shortstop, where he has 10 major-league starts, then Cabrera will be used at second base. If that plan becomes fit for the paper shredder, then Cabrera will be a mainstay at shortstop, where he has 720 major-league starts, and Franklin and Forsythe will form a platoon at second base.

Then there’s the wild card in Beckham, who has scant major-league experience with five appearances in 2013, but he has an opening to make the regular-season roster with a strong spring, thanks to the vacuum left behind after Ben Zobrist and Yunel Escobar were shipped away in a deal with the Oakland Athletics in January.

"There are a lot of moving parts at short and second, and there are going to be for a while," manager Kevin Cash said. "And coming into camp, that’s probably one of the areas that I’m really excited to see how that unfolds a little bit."

Likely, the whole situation will revolve around Cabrera, the blazing sun of this solar system. Matt Silverman, the Rays’ president of baseball operations, said team officials planned to have talks with the veteran on Saturday afternoon to gauge his thinking. Monday, Cabrera made clear to reporters that he would prefer to stick with one position.

"The only prediction is that he’s going to be an everyday player and hitting in an important part of our lineup," Silverman said of Cabrera. "Where he is positionally is to be determined. … He came here to be an everyday player, and that’s what he’s going to be."

Overall, this competition’s value depends on the eye of the beholder. Take Forsythe, who said, "I love it. I think it’s good, not only for myself, but I think it’s going to be good for the other guys. Everybody is going to want to step up to be a step ahead of the other guy." Then take Franklin, who said, "I don’t really think it’s a competition at all. I think if we just try to put it that way, we kind of just try to put our own pressure on ourselves. … We’re all a team here."

Whatever the outcome, the middle-infield question will add spice to a camp that lacks sizzle in the drama department.

Think about it. The Rays’ rotation is settled, aside from the fifth-starter job before Matt Moore returns from Tommy John surgery in June at the earliest, though Alex Colome enters as the favorite to secure that role. The outfield should include some combination of Kevin Kiermaier, Desmond Jennings and Steven Souza, with Brandon Guyer mixed in. Then James Loney will be at first base, Evan Longoria at third and, most times, Rene Rivera will start at catcher.

"You don’t get your hopes up," Forsythe said. "You don’t think too far ahead. I’ve learned my lesson doing that in the past."

"I’m just going to try to get as much info as I can," Franklin said, "and just kind of learn and watch and do what I can."

Certainly, Cash and Silverman will do plenty of watching to solve their middle-infield puzzle.

Game on. Race on.

Mobile World Congress doesn’t officially start until Monday, but HTC is hoping to get a head start on the competition with the unveiling of the One M9. The press event starts at 10:00 am EST. We have a fairly good idea of what the HTC One M9′s hardware will offer, but it’ll be interesting to see what the software experience on the new phone will be like and if HTC will announce a fitness tracker or that elusive smartwatch that was originally promised for late 2014.

Cowboys expect to use franchise tag on Dez Bryant by Monday

Updated FEB 28, 2015 4:26p ET

Cowboys Vice President Stephen Jones confirmed to FOX Sports Southwest that the team indeed expects to apply the franchise tag to wide receiver Dez Bryant by Monday’s deadline.

"I still think that it’s probably, you know, would be a stretch to think that we would have something done by Monday and beat the franchise-tag deadline," Jones said. "Looks like we’re eyeing a franchise tag on Dez, but certainly won’t stop us from working hard to get a long-term deal."

The Cowboys were close to a "Cowboy-for-Life" deal with Bryant back in late October, but negotiations went back to square one as Bryant fired agent Eugene Parker in favor of Tom Condon, who the Cowboys front office met with this past week.

"Jerry Sr. and myself actually had a meeting with Tom Condon, his agent, Tuesday night." Jones said. "Had a good long visit."

The last time the Cowboys applied the franchise tag was in 2013 with Anthony Spencer, who missed 15 games due to a bone bruise in his left knee. The tag was applied because of indecision between the Cowboys and Spencer. Jones made clear the club is tagging Bryant to buy more negotiating time.

"We just don’t want to lose his rights," said Jones. "We think Dez is a, you know, unique player and certainly a big part of what we do in terms of what we’ve done, our success, and certainly going forward.

HTC One M9 hands-on video hits YouTube before tomorrow’s unveiling Threads

htc-one-m9-pool

HTC will pull back the curtain to unveil the HTC One M9 in less than 24 hours, but that doesn’t mean you need to wait ’till then to see the first hands-on video of HTC’s flagship smartphone. A reporter who received early access to the device mistakenly published a video to YouTube, giving us a good look at the build of the phone and comparing it to the HTC One phones from the past two years. While the One M9 doesn’t appear to hold any more secrets, we’re hoping that HTC does have a few tricks up its sleeve to show off at tomorrow’s big press event.

Miami CB Antonio Crawford released from football team

Updated FEB 28, 2015 3:32p ET

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Miami rising senior cornerback Antonio Crawford is no longer part of the football program, UM officially announced on Saturday.

Crawford, who played in 38 games (two starts) from 2012-14, had not been participating in spring practice and had expressed his discontent via social media over the past week.

In a tweet last weekend, the 5-foot-11, 190 pounder posted "I’m like a piece of gold that gets treated like a piece of silver, therefore I’m out!!" before deleting it.

A former three-star recruit from Tampa Plant High School, Crawford recorded 58 tackles, one tackle for loss, one sack, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery and five pass breakups over three seasons.

Miami’s remaining cornerbacks are senior Tracy Howard, juniors Artie Burns and Jamal Carter, sophomore Corn Elder and redshirt freshman Ryan Mayes. Sheldrick Redwine and Michael Jackson will arrive after their high school graduations. Crawford was listed behind Burns on the depth chart.

Random Rose

Random Thoughts.
By Rose.
1. Kristen Stewart has achieved something
no other American actress has before,
winning a César at France’s most prestigious film award show.
To all the haters out there…
who had their Kristen voodoo doll full of pins

Hoping against hope that Kristen wouldn’t win…
SUCKS to be you.
FIRST AMERICAN ACTRESS
to win the award.
First.
FUCKING FIRST.
It was such an incredible honor
and so well deserved.
CONGRATS KRISTEN!!
2. Tom and Rob.
(and Sienna too… haha)
SWEET PICTURE.
I suppose I could hate on Sienna.
(it is the fandom way, after all)
There she is…
sandwiched between two of my favorite people.
But alas.
While I might be a tad bit envious…
(I am human after all)
Hate/Jealousy is so overdone in this fandom
as it is.
I’m over it.
But Rob and Tom are overwhelmingly adorable.
Wonder what they are all laughing at?
3. According to the ‘baby fringe’
This is a woman who is not only pregnant…
but with her second child.
Could her stomach BE any flatter?
I wish I were kidding.
I wish they were kidding.
I wish someone was kidding.
Completely fabricated bullshit.

They were screeching about "PRgate"
being OVER AND DONE.
The experts.
The insiders.
And lo and behold.
Wrong again.
Just more lame excuses.
There are always more excuses.
Endless excuses.
You know why?
Because there are no sources.
None.
They know dick shit.
4. There was endless drama (as usual)
when Rob flew out of LA after the Oscars
to go to London to be with Twigs.
Like.
HELLO?
ARE YOU NEW HERE?
Where did you think he was going?
Who did you think he was going to?
Rob pretty much did what most
 people expected him to do
and it STILL causes drama.
Why is that?
It’s like EVERY DAMN TIME
Rob and Twigs are pictured together…
No matter how many times we’ve all seen it
No matter how many months its been going on…
There is STILL drama.
Shouldn’t it be the ‘norm’ now?
I mean…
Come on.
Like it or not
Rob is dating Twigs.
Sorry.
I loved Rob/Kristen too…
(*sigh*)
But life goes on.
It is what it is.
5. Stop blaming Rob.
Stop blaming Kristen.
Don’t you ever get tired of hating
and being bitter and angry all the time?
Especially over this stuff??
I mean… THINK about it.
Does any of this matter in
the grand scheme
of your life?
Come into 2015.
It’s looking to be a good year professionally
for BOTH of them.
(And see if you can go 5 minutes without
mentioning 2012 and Rupert.
I double dog dare you)
6. I don’t get the constant scrutiny
about Rob and Kristen’s ‘look’.
2 recent pictures.
Both of them look GREAT.
It’s ridiculous to judge them
for the mere minutes we see of their lives.
"It’s like soap opera. I try not to let it mess with me
 because my true personal life,
as much as people think they know about it,
they don’t know dick shit. Who could?
By the way, nobody knows.
Nobody knows what the fuck is going on."
"Your life becomes this stage show,
broadcast for public consumption.
Like, I was probably followed here,
and they’re going to photograph every
expression I make, and wonder what it means
and then thats the show thats going
to be running tonight.
And sometimes they catch something true
but often its rooted in pure falseness."

- Kristen
Listen to her.
Sincerely.
In her own words
she is telling you.
Believe her.
Nobody knows what the fuck is going on.
We, as fans…
can only hope they are loved
and safe
and happy.
This post is brought to you by
Tom Sturridge.
I absolutely adore him.

And

Green Sheep.
Forever.
Always.
And to Leonard Nimoy
Live Long and Prosper.
R.I.P.
Until next time.
Bye for now.
P.S. Maps To The Stars is now out in theaters and VOD.
You love Rob?
Go watch it.
