Black Friday deals: Amazon Echo on sale for $149 Threads

Amazon Echo

Looking for a great Bluetooth Speaker for your house with a built-in personal assistant? The Amazon Echo is on sale for $149, $31 less than what Amazon typically charges for it.

In addition to connecting to your phone to music playback, the Echo uses Amazon’s Alexa cloud personal assistant service to help you create shopping lists, answer basic questions, read the news to you and even tap into your home automation system and control different parts of your house. Yes, Google Now on your smartphone can do a lot of those same things, but everyone we’ve talked to who owns the Amazon Echo simply raves out how awesome it is. The Amazon Echo is on sale through December 1st, but we’re not sure if Amazon will be able keep it in stock with the reduced $149 price point.

Black Friday deals: OnePlus 2 and OnePlus X available without invites, discounts on accessories Threads

one-plus

If you’ve really been waiting to get your hands on the OnePlus 2 or OnePlus X but haven’t been able to snatch up one of those elusive invitations yet, this is exactly what you’ve been waiting for. OnePlus is getting into the holiday mood by opening up sales of the OnePlus 2 and the new OnePlus X to everyone, no invitation required. Unfortunately, there’s no real discount on the two phones since OnePlus isn’t really making much of a margin on them. The OnePlus 2 is listed for $389, while the OnePlus X carries its usual $249 sticker price. If all you need is a new case or other accessories for your OnePlus phone, the company is also offering discounts on its cases, screen protectors, cables, power adapters and headphones. Most items are only discounted by 10%, but accessories for the OnePlus One are 90% off.

OnePlus is offering up its phones without invitation and the discounts on its accessories from November 27 through November 30. That being said, we wouldn’t be surprised if OnePlus cuts the sale short if it runs out of supply of its two phones.

Google slashes $80 off Nexus 5X price, $200 off Nexus 9 Threads

lgnexus5xleaktitle

Google has been teasing its Black Friday deals over the past couple of days, and now those sales have finally been revealed.

The Google Store is offering $80 off the Nexus 5X, which means that the 16GB model is $299.99 and the 32GB unit is $349. As of this writing, all models are in stock and ready to ship in 1-2 business days.

We’re used to seeing older Nexus hardware get discounted, but the Nexus 5X is only around a month old. It’s kind of crazy to see a new Nexus device getting such a significant discount, but we’re also not about to argue getting an $80 discount on a shiny new Nexus phone.

In addition to discounting the Nexus 5X, Google is offering sales on several other products. You can get $200 off the Nexus 9, leaving its price at $199 for the 16GB model and $279 for the 32GB unit. Other sales include $30 off a Nest Cam, $80 to $100 off the Huawei Watch, up to $50 off select Chromebooks, and some Chromecast deals, too.

There are some significant savings to be had from Google’s store, so head on over and see if any of the deals pique your interest.

Huawei Mate 8 packs Android 6.0, 6-inch display, and aluminum body Threads

huaweimate8angle

A little more than one year after the debut of the Ascend Mate7, Huawei has taken the wraps off of its latest flagship, the Mate 8.

Like the Mate7 before it, the Mate 8 boasts a 6-inch 1920×1080 display. Running on that display, you’ll find Android 6.0 beneath Huawei’s custom EMUI 4.0 user interface. The front of the Mate 8 is also home to an 8-megapixel camera, and around back is a 16-megapixel camera with a Sony IMX298 sensor with optical image stabilization and an f/2.0 aperture. Resting beneath that rear camera is a fingerprint reader.

Inside of its aluminum body lives an octa-core Kirin 950 processor that’s made with a 16nm FinFET+ process. Also included with the 950’s chipset is what Huawei calls an intelligent i5 processor that supports speech recognition, low-power consumption MP3, and a reduction in the power consumption of location-based services.

huaweimate8mocha

Also inside the Mate 8’s aluminum body is 3/4GB of RAM, 32/64/128GB of storage, a microSD slot, and a 4000mAh battery. The Mate 8 will be sold in Champagne Gold, Moonlight Silver, Space Gray, and Mocha Brown color options. It’s going to launch in China in Q1 2016 at a starting price of 3199 Chinese Yuan, or around $500 USD. There will be beefier versions of the phone available that include up to 4GB of RAM and 128GB of storage, with the maxed out Mate 8 setting buyers back around $690 USD.

The Mate 8 has a nice design, and I have to say, I’m digging the Mocha Brown. Can we get more brown phones, please? As for its specs, the Mate 8 appears to have most of the features that you’d expect from a flagship Android phone in 2015. Whether or not all of that translates into a quality device remains to be seen, but with a launch coming in Q1 2016, it shouldn’t be too long before we find out.

Black Friday deals: save up to $100 on select Samsung tablets Threads

483915-galaxy-view-tablet

Black Friday is always a good day to save big on tablets. If you were thinking of picking up a Samsung tablet, you might want to check out Amazon’s site, because they have cut the prices on all their Samsung tablet inventory and are offering up to $100 off certain models. If you want the biggest discounts, you do need to be willing to spend a little extra cash. The 9.7-inch Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 with 32GB of internal storage is listed for $399.99 (usually $499.99) and the  brand new 18.4-inch Samsung Galaxy View is $100 cheaper, listed at $499.99.

Samsung’s smaller and cheaper tablets are also discounted, but be sure to take a look at each tablet’s specs before buying it. The Samsung Galaxy Tab A 8-Inch Tablet is a reasonable buy at $179.99, but the Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 at $119 should likely only be considered if you’re looking for a tablet that will be used as an e-reader or for basic web surfing.

Happy shopping!

Instagram bringing multiple account support to Android Threads

instagram

While many of us struggle to maintain even a single Instagram account, there are those that, either due to work or a pure love of filtered photos, need to manage several Instagram accounts at once. In the past, that has meant either questionably functional workarounds or constantly signing out and back in under your various accounts. Now Instagram has finally taken pity on diehard Instagram fans of the Android world and is introducing support for multiple accounts in the native app.

You will add the new accounts by taking a look at the Settings screen and scrolling all the way to the bottom, where you will find the appropriately named “Add Account”, and off you go. Once you have multiple accounts running, you can switch between them quickly by just tapping on your username in the upper-left corner of the profile screen.

As is so often the case with these things, it is a staged roll out, and some that were seeing the feature earlier today have indicated that it has already vanished, so it’s possible that Instagram didn’t quite intend for this to slip out yet. Whatever the case the implementation seemed too clean to be a complete whoops on their part so rest assured it will make its way to all soon enough and you can return to building your social media empire more efficiently than ever before.

Black Friday deals: Jaybird BlueBuds X Bluetooth Headphones just $79.99 Threads

jaybird-bluebuds-x-white

We are in the process of reviewing the updated version of these headphones, the Jaybird X2, but today’s deal is on the originals and after having used them for over 2 years now I can attest that they remain one of my go to pairs of headphones for exercise and on the go use.

If you want to check out my quick review from back in December of 2013 the only thing that has really changed since then is the price, with today’s $79.99 representing one of the all time lows. The Amazon deal price is only available on the “Storm White” pair, but they look great and will match nicely with your stormtrooper costume while you wait in line for Episode VII in a few weeks. ;) That one didn’t last, but Walmart does still have the black BlueBuds X at $79.99 or if you want the latest and greatest the Jaybird X2 headphones are also on sale right now for $129.99, a solid savings off the $179.99 they typically command. There are six color options if you go this route.

If you have any questions about either set of headphones just ask and I’ll be happy to answer in comments.

HTC Preview program officially comes to the US Threads

htc-logo-paper

The HTC Preview program is officially expanding to the US and HTC is looking for brave souls who are willing to lend a helping hand. HTC Preview participants are often given pre-release software updates and may also be sent pre-release devices for field testing to ensure that all bugs are worked out before the product is made available to the general public. While getting software updates or new devices before everyone else may sound like a lot of fun, HTC is only looking for serious participants to help them with the program. You also have to be willing to let HTC into your life like never before. The pre-release software updates that you test will contain software that logs network/signal strength, battery information, usage times and the apps that you use. That being said, HTC won’t be keeping track of your personal data like passwords, account information, text messages, MMS, emails or call logs (unless authorized by you).

HTC’s team that’s heading up the HTC Preview program in the US just finished up an AMA on Reddit, answering quite a few questions from the community. If you’re at all interested in joining HTC Preview, you can sign up here. We also suggest you read through the AMA since it contains quite a few details on what you can expect if you are selected to be a part of the program. HTC isn’t saying how many people it’s hoping to recruit, but you do need to have service on Verizon, T-Mobile, Sprint or AT&T just to be considered.

Do you think the feedback HTC will get through this program will help solve some of the issues that the company’s been facing these past few years?
